Today my memory took me back to Sussex County
And showed me things I hadn't seen in years
And when I saw the things I left behind in Sussex County
I couldn't help but brush away a tear

The milking barns of the dairy farms, and the smell of new-cut hay
And patterns left behind by tractor wheels
On the old dirt road that took us to that secret fishin' hole
And the place we'd watch the deer come out to play

Farmers in their pickup trucks, filled with nature's bounty
Carryin' the harvest into town
Past the lakes and the rivers, and the forests and the fields
And the gentle rolling hills of Sussex County

Today my memory took me back to Sussex County
Where I spent so many happy years
I thought about the friends I left behind in Sussex County
And I couldn't help but brush away a tear

Quiet talks on moonlight walks in the cool September air
Eatin' cotton candy at the county fair
Coffee at the diner, at the start of a brand new day
And the wise old man who used to cut my hair

I close my eyes and listen, and I still can hear the sound
Of church bells ringing loud and clear
While the songs we sang in Sunday School went floating on the breeze
That blew across the hills of Sussex County

Today my memory took me back to Sussex County
And the ones I held so near and dear
The loved ones who now sleep beneath the soil of Sussex County
And I couldn't help but brush away a tear

Today my memory took me back to Sussex County
And I couldn't help but brush away a tear
