If you go down to the river, where they built the big new bridge
The one that meets the highway where it comes down off the ridge
And you look among the weeds, you still can see the stones
That once held up the house that I called home
At the edge of the water, right beside the big flat rock
There’s some busted-up old boards that used to be the dock
Where we fished and we swam on lazy summer days
Never dreaming time would take us all away
That old river was there before I came along
And that old river will still be there, long after I am gone
Sometimes I get a feelin’ that it’s time to go back home
And listen to the river sing its song
I think about the names that we carved into the tree
I wonder where they are today, and if they think of me
Do they all remember, or am I the only one
Who goes back to hear the river sing its song
The heart of that old river has been beating for so long
Beating with a rhythm so steady and so strong
The music of the river keeps calling me back home
Oh, how I’d love to hear that river sing its song
‘Cause that old river was there before I came along
And that old river will still be there, long after I am gone
Sometimes I get a feelin’ that it’s time to go back home
And listen to the river sing its song
